Love Aquatic is an art exhibition featuring the painting, drawing and photography by Alison Frank. It is the merger of her work as a visual artist and as a professional mermaid. Her paintings in this collection are inspired by the beauty experienced and captured through her freediving as a mermaid. The underwater world is a tranquil escape where time and daily pressures seem to dissolve. Water and the gravity free environment have many therapeutic healing benefits from fitness to pain relief. This solstice has been one component, for her, in managing a diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in a holistic approach. To this underwater world, she adds her surreal and playful mix of characters. Children gravitate to water and the joy of swimming. As adults, we often lose our affinity for this magical place. She visually shares the ephemeral beauty of the way water reflects light in a way we can never experience above the surface. Through this exhibition, she hopes to connect to viewers in a way that might inspire them to revisit the water and experience it’s many benefits.

ARTSPOT'S ANNUAL UNDER $100 ART SHOW

ARTSPOT's ANNUAL UNDER $100 ART SHOW is easily one of our most celebrated group exhibitions. This show not only helps artists show and sell their work, but makes original art and goods available to those who may not have been able to afford it otherwise. What better way to spend your hard earned dollars over the holiday season than to support your local arts community? We have a variety of items including paintings, photography, pottery, glassware, jewelry, clothing, prints, woodwork, leather work, sculpture, accessories and more!​

Through this October exhibition, Rochelle and Alison explore imaginary deep sea and aquatic creatures with a nuanced dark twist for the spooky season. Costume and fashion details are layered onto their creatures. Their characters come to life throughout the space in a variety of mediums including drawings, paintings, resin work and sculptural. This variety of mediums creates a dynamic flow through the space. They invite you to join them at their residency through costume parties, collaborative art creation, and workshops.

This playful celebration of a fictional underwater world is designed to draw people in. It is paired with dark undertones that provide, not only humor and interesting visual juxtapositions, but are also there to reflect on larger environmental issues. As a large portion of our aquatic life is undiscovered and rapidly disappearing, what unique creatures will we never discover?

Flip the Script, a monumental exhibition at Fort Calgary showcasing the work of 150 artists is presented in partnership by Fort Calgary and ART SPOT, fills both floors of Fort Calgary’s replica Barracks.

Jennifer Thompson, Fort Calgary president, says she sought out the partnership with ART SPOT to help make Fort Calgary spaces more relevant and reflective of the many diverse stories that contribute to the site’s history, and to connect the community through art.

 “For a really long time Fort Calgary focused on one story, the story of the North West Mounted Police on this land. There’s a lot more to tell,” Thompson said. “This area has so much natural beauty, so much community and a vast history — what better way to explore these things than through the eyes of local artists?”

 ART SPOT founder Emma Justine was excited to collaborate with Fort Calgary and to provide this unique opportunity for local artists.

 “Art is a powerful tool to make your voice heard and to impact positive change,” Justine said. “We have such a wonderfully diverse community of artists that have created custom collections to tell the story of what Fort Calgary means to them. This is really going to be a special exhibition.”

 This multi level group exhibition features over 150 artists; from youth, to emerging, to professional.

Each year, A/P holds a print exchange that is open to local, national, and international artists working in print media. A/P retains 2 copies of each limited edition that is submitted to exhibit for the general community, and to raise funds towards A/P’s artistic and educational programming.

During Alberta Culture Days, A/P teamed up with 6 local breweries to have local artists hand-carve large scale designs into woodblocks that they printed with a STEAMROLLER!

Come enjoy these prints along with a pint or two, and some bbq at our opening reception.

All prints will be on display and available for SALE. Proceeds from print sales will directly support the artists and Alberta Printmakers.
